Oblivion Studios Developing a South Park RPG

Posted on December 2, 2011 by Chris "CoNoJo" Norris-Jones

And now, from our “news so weird it could be mistaken as a Mad Libs” category, it was announced earlier this week that Oblivion Studios, the team known for picking up the franchises of others and running with it, with such specific examples as Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Fallout: New Vegas, will be delving into…well, strange new territory.

South Park, the smart and bawdy cartoon loved by savvy adults, children wishing to defy their parents, and cynical misanthropists the world over, is going to be made into a full-scale RPG. You’ll reportedly be playing as a new child to South Park, who’ll (I’m sure) make friends with the gang, take part in all kinds of crazy shenanigans, stop some ominous threat to the city and, dare I say it, save the world.

What makes this truly interesting to me is that it potentially has all the trappings to make it a really exciting product. Oblivion Studios, whose track record though not un-tarnished can definitely put something interesting forward, will be working with both Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who will be not only writing the story and dialogue for the game but will also reprise their multitudinous voice roles for the occasion. So if the end product ends up becoming the insane bastard-child of Baldur’s Gate and an episode of South Park, then despite all the odds that could be something truly magical.
