*Updated* Details of Valve’s Rumoured Console “Steam Box” Leaking Out

Posted on March 6, 2012 by Chris "CoNoJo" Norris-Jones

*Update* Well I was both wrong and right about Valve’s alleged Steam Box. In a conversation with Stephen Kotillo of Kotaku, Valve’s PR guru Doug Lombardi simultaneously confirmed and quashed the rumours, stating that while a Steam-specific console “is stuff that we’re working on…it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.” So it is technically something that exists, just maybe try not to hold your breath. They’ll probably end up releasing it alongside Half-Life 3, in 2025.

Because Valve has not yet siphoned every last lonely penny from my ever-dwindling bank account, rumours are being all but confirmed that the gentlemen behind Steam, Portal, Half-Life, and happiness are making their own foray into the console world. Dubbed the “Steam Box”, details are slowly being drawn out that show what looks to be a dedicated Steam platform, for all your gaming and compulsive-game-buying needs.

Though Valve has still yet to officially announce any such invention being prepared for the unwashed masses, an image (seen above) released by Valve employee Greg Coomer this past November shows a tiny, self-built PC with specs almost exactly what the Steam Box is rumoured to have, including a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. Though this is certainly no smoking gun, in an industry where no one can hold a secret and every rumour turns out to be true I wouldn’t be the least surprised if the above image is a Steam Box prototype.

What I’ve been finding even more interesting however are a number of patent images recently uncovered by Screw Attack, showing patents for what would be the Steam Box’s packed-in controller. While I’m no hardware designer, it looks like they may have gotten just a liiiiitle bit of inspiration from Microsoft, wouldn’t you say?

Geek Badge Joins Internet Blackout to Fight SOPA.

Posted on January 13, 2012 by Wyatt "Sheriff Earp" Fossett

It’s taken me a few solid days of contemplation and identity discovery to finally decide that Geek Badge will join the horde of internet heavyweights and blackout our website on January 18th. The date is unquestionably the single day that could change our entire future as not only journalists and writers, but as gamers and fans of all things the internet has to offer.

According to the Entertainment Consumers Association the SOPA act will result in the following if passed:

    • It strips current laws by now making internet companies, which used to be immune, liable for their users’ communications.  This means that Facebook, Youtube, WordPress, Google and more are now on the hook for what you post.
    • It gives the US Attorney General, with court order, the power to seize websites that possibly infringe or partially infringe copyright.  There would be no due process and no chance to defend yourself before the seizure.  The mere accusation can get a website taken away.
    • It violates Net Neutrality by ordering internet providers, advertising companies and payment systems to block accused websites with technology that just doesn’t exist.
    • It threatens users by imposing fines or jail time for posting even derivatives of copywrited work(s).  A video of your karaoke, playing the piano, video game speed trial would now all be punishable if a copyright holder decides to enforce it.

However, the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) has publicly supported the SOPA act and in a quote (grabbed from Destructoid) stated:

As an industry of innovators and creators, we understand the importance of both technological innovation and content protection, and do not believe the two are mutually exclusive. Rogue websites – those singularly devoted to profiting from their blatant illegal piracy – restrict demand for legitimate video game products and services, thereby costing jobs. Our industry needs effective remedies to address this specific problem, and we support the House and Senate proposals to achieve this objective. We are mindful of concerns raised about a negative impact on innovation. We look forward to working with the House and Senate, and all interested parties, to find the right balance and define useful remedies to combat willful wrongdoers that do not impede lawful product and business model innovation.

It’s extremely surprising that some groups are so quick to back the legislature without thinking of its lasting effects on their own industries. The ESA houses more than a handful of heavyweight video game and film developers which have all since been told they support SOPA as well, thanks to their relationship with the ESA. Superb.

courtesy of Battlefieldo.com

Since the information about this bill has been made publicly available, several pillars in the expanded internet world have decided to “Blackout” their website for 12 hours on the 18th (during the governments discussion on whether to pass the bill). The parties include Reddit, Destructoid, GoG and possibly even Wikipedia. So, like our higher peers, we will blackout our entire site for 12 hours starting at 8:00 am Eastern Time on January 18th. Epic Games has made it very clear that they do not support SOPA and I hope that even though we stand on a small pile compared to the other activists in this gargantuan issue, our voices and Blackout might be heard by someone.

For some strange reason, if SOPA passes, Geek Badge may vanish from existence so we MUST FIGHT THIS.

The 2011 Geek Badge Holiday Buyer’s Guide

Posted on December 20, 2011 by Wyatt "Sheriff Earp" Fossett

Holiday Buyer’s Guide:

THERE’S ONLY A WEEK LEFT! HURRY! Inside this guide you will find a true interpretation and unbiased view of what to buy the gamer in your life. I will pick two games per console, at least one accessory and some universal tech to go along with it. I will also be giving you the insight on the must buy fashion for that geek you love and provide the best in all worlds. As we draw near the end of 2011, what better way to spend it than celebrating the gamer that is in your heart or inside you!

PC:

Must have games:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Simply put, this is one of the greatest games anyone has ever made. For the thrill seeking troll slayer in all of us, Skyrim is soaked with excellent adventure and epic treasure. One of the best RPG’s ever made (if not, THE best) to date. It will offer up more enjoyment than a life-time supply of vending machine sticky hands. Dragons slaying and Magic wielding has never felt so natural. I wish I had more time in the day to play Skyrim.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Set to grace the world of PC gamers in the next week, SWOR plans to take over the widening world of MMORPG titles. With the slow burning demise of the heavy hitter World of Warcraft, SWOR has a slightly opened door ahead of them and if it’s done right (which Bioware is famous for) then said door will be easily kicked open and The Old Republic can set up camp as the “must play” MMO. Why should you play it? Because it’s STAR WARS. Just do it. OR ELSE!

RAGE

The triumphant return of the godlike minds at id Software have created another amazing experience. A wasteland like no other and is experience like no other. The story of RAGE really sucks you in and lends to character progression and decision time. Probably the best graphics in games today (yes, even on consoles), RAGE takes the cake for style and just good ol’ fashion shotguns. It’s a must play for any gamer.

Portal 2

The successor to the cult hit Portal; the second installment doesn’t stray far from the extremely satisfying original recipe. The characters set in the game are beyond the first title and will stay in the hearts of gamers worldwide for their entire lives. The puzzles are extremely challenging, but let you revel in your success along the way. A worthy brain teaser for any expert.

Battlefield3

Everyone has one guilty FPS pleasure, and this year the entire community went nuts over two big league titles arriving on PC. Both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 are viable titles for your gamer. The only question is preference. BF3 is larger, and more “simulation”. It Boasts high quality graphics and more realistic bullet movements. OH, and vehicles. Where MW3 is a lot more of an arcade feel with a wider variety of multiplayer types and pulls the ADD case straight into reality. With a nicer upgrade/unlock tree, MW3 will satisfy the FPS craving.

Must Have Peripherals:

Razer Mamba Gaming Mouse

This 4G Dual Sensor mouse is the absolute bee’s knees of left and or right clicking today. The smooth finish and perfect fit (even for my meaty hands) creates the utmost of comfort for those long gaming sessions.  By far the most desirable mouse on the market, even if it’s wireless! The Mamba doesn’t miss a beat compared to it’s tethered counterparts and no PC action is the same without it.

Psyko Krypton Headset

audio right into your ear to recreate the perfect room. BUT ON YOUR HEAD! Equipped with pivoting outer-ear walls, the Krypton set allows the wearer the ability of listening to their surroundings while enjoying the crisp and clean sound. The Krypton also has a removable microphone making it easy to go from a spectator to a commentator. Not being shy with it’s amazing 5.1 sound, the Krypton headset throws you for a loop by placing it’s immense speakers inside the bridge of the headphones. Using audio waveguides, the sound is then brought down the arms and throws the

SteelSeries Merc Keyboard

Any player worth his HP will tell you that a proper keyboard is where you can win or lose games. The SS Merc has an anti-ghost capability of up to 7 key-strokes as well as an optimized set of keys to the left specifically for gaming or “fragging”. Key Illumination customization is only half of the awesomeness; the Merc also comes with Z Engine software that allows you to completely remap every single key on the deck. No one will be able to out WASD anyone that equips the Merc to their arsenal.

Xbox 360:

Must Have Games:

Gears of War 3

The third and final installment of the Epic Games’ franchise is a big and badass as ever before. In the trials of GoW3 Marcus and the rest of the rag-tag gang set off to save Marcus’ father and destroy the queen of the Locust once and for all. Of course, the scale and action-to-the-tits mentality of the previous titles are there and look better than any other 3rd person shooter out there. GOW3 also stand to take my vote for best multiplayer of the year.

Dark Souls

Despite the decadence of the god-like Skyrim, Dark Souls makes a great run for RPG of the year (of the decade even). However, DS is not for the faint of heart and only those willing to gain some scars along the way dare traverse the unrelenting depths of its story. The most rewarding torture provided by Dark Souls lends the perfect motivator for any hard-core gamer.

Forza Motorsport 4

In a time and place where racing games have been boiled down to the best of the best and the shelves of stock don’t contain an abundance of one-shot pieces of garbage; Forza 4 is a diamond among feces. Utterly the best racing game on any console to date and to add insult to Sony’s gapping injury, it’s 360 exclusive. A must have for any racing fan and Xbox lover.

Halo: Combat Evolved 10th Anniversary Edition

While there doesn’t really seem to be a real reason why I should defend Halo:CE as a must play. However, because this is a list for the people not necessarily “in the know”, I will humor you. Halo:CE reinvented the FPS genre and completely revolutionized online multiplayer. With both the original Xbox and Halo:CE hitting their 10th anniversary this November, the classic title was re-mastered and completely amped up. Now, you get the original epic story, but with current generation graphics and modern online MP. There is a lot to see and a lot of memories to rekindle.

Must Have Peripherals:

Astro A40 Headphones

The Astro brand is synonymous with quality and Major League Gaming. The amazing A40’s proved not only complete comfort while gaming, but they also provide an amazing 7.1 Dolby Digital sound. Paired with the amazing wireless mix-amp system, the A40’s give nothing but love and comfort to any user. Along with the unmatched audio quality, the Astro A40’s allow multi-set linking and complete noise cancelling microphone for multiple party use. Plus, Astro sells a lot of unique speak tags for the endless desire to show some personal expression.

MadCatz MLG Fightstick

As the resurgence of Fighting games takes further wind with the recent release of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom and the pending launch of Street Fighter X Tekken (and the handful of other Tekken titles), gamers needed top tier hardware. This is the part of the story where MadCatz steps up with their MLG branded Fightsticks. With authentic Sanwa Denshi joystick and 8 button set-ups, nothing on the market feels more like a cut out from the arcade machines.

Evil Controller

While I WILL bitch slap you if you bring one of these to a tournament, or to play against me, I do love the idea of having custom controllers do screw around with. Evil Controllers mods nearly any controller you can think of. The most common mod of course would be rapid fire, a mod that makes the controller think you’re pressing the button way faster than you are. I also really enjoy some of the physical mods that EC does like the bullet casing face buttons and the 4-way split D-Pad.

Playstation 3:

Must Have Games:

Batman: Arkham City

This year we were privileged enough to get the second title in the hit RockSteady Batman series and it didn’t disappoint. B:AC took the bar set by the first game hulk smashed it to oblivion making for the greatest comic book inspired adventure ever. The semi-open world and great cast of Batman characters puts players right in the shoes of the Dark Knight and completely transforms any innocent gamer into the ultra badass detective billionaire.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

While the rest of the world wrestles with putting time into the expansive world of Skyrim (and everyone, regardless of console/PC should be doing), Playstation owners have one rather fantastic delight that the other two worlds do not. The third, and rumored “final”, title in the Uncharted franchise shakes no finger at mediocrity and meets the level of awesome that was set by the second. It’s a heart pounding action romp from start to finish.

Little Big Planet 2

If there is a select group of people that don’t like LBP, then they must be either crazy or stupid. There is nothing but love oozing from the second game. With more ways to customize and more awesome costumes to wear, your slightly humanoid fabric person will always be fresh. There is also more than a dozen new tools in LBP2 that can put your sackboy (or girl) in a car, gunship, plane, and beyond. Once again, the creation is absolutely absurd in size and nothing will slow down the community.

Infamous 2

Now don’t scoff because I didn’t put Killzone 3 on this list. I wanted to include Infamous over said game because it contains something that we have so little of these days, originality. The story behind Cole McGrath isn’t the best script ever, but the gameplay, environment, characters and missions are more than worth it. The second game see’s Cole try to rid New Marais (their version of New Orleans) of evil before the big ass demon that destroys their fake New York reaches the city. I had so much fun with the sophomore title from Sucker Punch and I pass that onto you.

Must Have Peripherals:

PS Move

What I like to call the “Real Wii”, the PlayStation Move does exactly what Nintendo intended, but properly. In addition to being the closest thing to One-To-One recognition, the PS Move features a small line-up of mature titles; something the Wii has missed out on completely (except that bad Dead Space game). Motion controlled gaming is still by far, just a gimmick. However, the PS Move is the best Gimmick thus far for the PS3.

Wireless Keypad

There is few better miniature keyboards in the world, and the Sony Wireless Keypad for the Dualshock controller got me through a lot of chatter and blubbering in DCUO. It’s a must have for any PS3 fan and will even lend a good hand when surfing the web on the console. The buttons themselves will pick up on your finger, creating a touchpad for cursor movement. What a good idea! It’s awesome. The only downfall is consistently having to plug it into the console for charging.

SplitFish Frag FX

For all those with separation anxiety and a complex that PC gaming will, in large part, be the birth of gaming forever; there is the Frag FX by Split Fish. With multiple different versions, the Frag FX puts a Wii-like joystick in your left hand, while setting down a sharp and accurate mouse in your right. This creates the perfect gaming sequence for that person who always says “I prefer WASD and Mice to Controllers”.

Wii:

Must Have Games:

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Literally, Skyward Sword is the ONLY absolute must-have game of this year. The 25th Anniversary of the coolest Hylian has proved to be epic and it’s topped off by a dollop of Skyward whip cream. Finally we get an accurate Wii-motion game that takes completely full use of their invention while creating an interesting and pliable gameplay mechanic. It is about time we all had a reason to pull our Wii’s out from under the wobbly table leg.

Gaming Set-up:

Sony Playstation Display

If you’ve ever need a little bit more size, with 10 times the ingenuity, look no further. The new Playstation branded Sony display has a sleek (PSP resembling) 24-inch monitor in full 1080p high-def. The display is rather thin, has a sturdy stand, and is ready out of the box to play full 3D gaming goodness. The price tag at $499 is a bit steep, but their revolutionary SimulView technology is well worth it. SimulView allows two people wearing separate 3D glasses, to see 2 different images. No more split screen, no more screen watching. This is the future of apartment gaming.

Playseat SV III

At first glance the SV III just looks like the coolest thing ever for racing fans. However, you would only be ¾ right. The Playseat would be the perfect seat for any game. Period. There are some great gaming chairs out there and I won’t take anything from them. I love the Playseat though. It’s comfortable, stylish, but most of all, it’s completely ready for your steering wheel get-up. The SV III is the absolute cream of the crop for gaming furniture.

Sleeper Hits:

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

I must admit (ignore this part friends from Bethesda) that I was going to give The Witcher 2 my RPG of the year, maybe even my game of the year. However, it was edged out. I am still so satisfied with the extensive amount of entertainment and fun that I had exploring the vast world that is in this game. One of the most unique and refreshingly in-depth RPG’s in recent years. The Witcher 2 came completely out of the blue and thrust me into a world that I would ultimately fall in love with.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

I’m not saying that this game wasn’t on people’s radar. It was, believe me. The sad part was that everyone worldwide collectively held their breathe when they finally got their hands on it. No one will admit it now, because it kicked ass. But Deus Ex: Human Revolution had a lot of doubt following it. To bring back such a loved and cherished franchise was bold to say the least. It worked wonders though. DE:HR was probably in my top games of this year. Rife with action, sci-fi, story, and guns, I couldn’t stop playing. It’s just that good.

Should Avoid:

Dragon Age II

Woah! Hey, stop hating me with your eyes! Just listen first. if you are part of the group that loved the first Dragon Age (which I did as well, A LOT actually) then avoid DAII like the plague because that’s really what it is under its skin. For some reason Bioware decided to take all of the great in-depth things you liked about the original and replace it with plastic fruit. You know that moment where you think “I know that grape is going to taste great” and then its rubber? Yeah. Wait, am I the only one that’s ever done that? DAII is the largest step backward in gaming history. I absolutely adored the RPG elements of number one and that is all ripped away. The story is weak and the characters are shallow (sometimes indecent) models. Just run. RUN AWAY!

L.A. Noire

Unless you are merely a spectator (and even then the movie would seem oddly paced), L.A. Noire lacks any sort of character attachment and fun. There is hardly anything to explore, and nearly zero absolutely fun moments. I must applaud Rockstar for their creation of the facial recognition software that had everyone going nuts over this game. But that can’t be the only drawing factor to your extremely unexplored game. I am extremely looking forward to hearing about the possibility of there being a second in the series, but the first one left me in awe (and not in the good way). Unless you want a great display of computer emotion, avoid L.A. Noire and play Skyrim instead.

Thank you all for peeking through my choices for the must buy games and accessories of 2011! It has been such an amazing year and I cannot wait for the next one. I believe we all have some Skyrim to play, but pre-order Diablo III and Bioshock: Infinite first.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that these are all just based on MY OPINION. There is nothing wrong with the games you love that I didn’t mention, and for the commentors; this is not up for discussion :)

Have yourself a Geek Badge Christmas!

A Founding Father of Technology: RIP Steve Jobs

Posted on October 5, 2011 by Wyatt "Sheriff Earp" Fossett

Today, the world of technology, and humanity in general lost an icon.

from the splash page of the apple.com site.

A revolutionary in his own right, Steve Jobs, the co-founder of APPLE inc. passed away today from complications to pancreatic cancer. Nothing can replace Jobs in the world of technology and exploration, but nothing will ever be the same without him. We here at Geek Badge would like to send our good thoughts and love to the family and friends of Steve Jobs in this terrible time. I can’t even think of what else to say…

Wikipedia:

Steven Paul ”Steve“ Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American entrepreneur and inventor. He was co-founder, chairman, and former chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Jobs also previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney. He was credited in Toy Story (1995) as an executive producer.

In the late 1970s, Jobs, with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula, and others, designed, developed, and marketed one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC’smouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of theMacintosh. After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Jobs resigned from Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher-education and business markets. Apple’s subsequent 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its CEO from 1997 until 2011. In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. He remained CEO and majority shareholder at 50.1% until its acquisition by The Walt Disney company in 2006. Consequently Jobs became Disney’s largest individual shareholder at 7% and a member of Disney’s Board of Directors.

His aim to develop products that are both functional and elegant has earned him a devoted following.

On August 24, 2011, Jobs announced his resignation from his role as Apple’s CEO. In his letter of resignation, Jobs strongly recommended that the Apple executive succession plan be followed and Tim Cook be named as his successor. Per his request, Jobs was appointed chairman of Apple’s board of directors. On October 5, 2011 Apple announced that Steve Jobs had died at the age of 56.

It’s a sad day for everyone.

Shuhei Yoshida confirms that the PS Vita is region free!

Posted on September 18, 2011 by icelord75

So how tempted are you to get a PlayStation Vita? Well, if you’re the most keen to pick it up in North America or Europe, you might have the freedom to get your hands on it a little earlier. President of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has been under many Twitter questions recently, one of which about whether the PS Vita will be region-free. In a simple answer, he replied “Yes it is“.

What this means is that if you want to get the console from Japan, you can still play games from North America and Europe. You’d likely also be able to connect it with your NA or EU PS3 as well. As for whether you’d connect to your own region’s PSN or Japan’s is still somewhat of a mystery, but even so this is a fairly tempting idea. At the same time, it can only make you wonder how long before the console hits retailers outside of Japan.

If you wish to take advantage of this new fact, keep an eye out for the PS Vita when it releases in Japan on December 17th.

PlayStation Move Bundle announced for GoldenEye Reloaded

Posted on September 14, 2011 by icelord75

When we first got the announcement GoldenEye 007 Reloaded, it was explained quickly that the PlayStation Move was going to be a big force in the game. Much of the development and news has been about that control option already. So it’s only natural that it would get its own special bundle with the device, named the Double ‘O’ Edition.

Sold alongside the standalone game, the Double ‘O’ Edition will mostly be about gearing up players with all their Move needs. Inside the medium-sized box will be the game disc, a Playstation Move controller, a navigation controller, a PlayStation Eye, and the SharpShooter plastic peripheral. The price is currently unknown, but will likely be as much as other bundles of the same content such as the Resistance 3: Doomsday Edition, valued at $150.

Also announced with this bundle is more bonuses for all PS3 purchasers. Downloadable from the PSN for free at the game’s release will be Hugo Drax, villain from the Bond film Moonraker. Drax will be playable in the game’s local and online multiplayer modes, along with his signature Moonraker laser pistol.

The Double ‘O’ Edition will be released on November 1st, alongside with the standalone game for PS3 and Xbox 360.

PS Vita gets Japan Release Date and launch line-up!

Posted on September 14, 2011 by icelord75

The world’s been breathing down Sony’s neck about releasing Playstation Vita for a while now. They’ve been giving us a lot about upcoming games and features, but they’ve still held back from telling us when we can get our hands on it. As it appears, that wait is mostly over.

During their press conference at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that their new handheld will be released in Japan on December 17th this year. As a bonus, they also gave us the 26 games that’ll be released for it at launch. Many games are likely to be Japan-exclusive, but it means we’re likely to have just as good a number when it hits Europe and North America.

Sony also mentioned that the 3G service will be provided by their new partner, Japanese communications company ntt Docomo. As apposed to annual or monthly subscriptions, Japanese consumers will have the freedom to purchase prepaid hours for the system.

As for European and North American release dates, there still isn’t certainty. They’re still standing by their 2012 window, but it’s fair to speculate they’ll be getting it out pretty early. Already, they’re sure to be getting plenty of demanding feedback and letters on this announcement alone. Here’s hoping it’s sooner than later.

Don’t Expect the Playstation 4 in the Near Future

Posted on August 23, 2011 by Aaron "Angelbait" Fossett

A few months ago at E3, Nintendo’s unveiling of the Wii U really stirred up people’s expectations as to when we would see the new generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft.  While the scuttlebutt seems to be that the next Xbox is definitely on the horizon, Sony doesn’t seem to want to focus on playing that hardware game right now.  Shuhei Yoshida, president of worldwide studios at Sony Computer Entertainment,  stated flat out in an interview with Eurogamer that Sony has no immediate plans for another console.

A face you can trust.

As far as we are concerned, we have no desire now to do that [release a new home console].  Gamers always need something new and more exciting. If they’re seeing just similar types of games coming year after year, they will quickly lose their interest.  Looking like that, when you see games coming out on PS3, both the traditional type of games as well as new kind of games using PS Move, there is a lot more we can do from the game development standpoint. So as long as we and our developers can create new experiences that are more exciting to consumers, I see no need to transition into newer generation.

It seems that Yoshida is confident that the PS3 still has some legs on it, and I’m happy to hear that.  I’m really not looking forward to spending another couple hundred credits on another console to stick on my increasingly dusty shelf, but I also genuinely think that there is a lot more potential in the Playstation 3.  We’ve been seeing a lot of MMO titles making their first nervous debuts into the console world through the PS3, and with exclusive franchises like Uncharted, Infamous, and Killzone still going strong, along with HD rereleases of classic PS2 games, I would agree with Yoshida that the PS3 doesn’t need an upgrade quite yet.

New Xbox 360 Remote and Bluetooth Headset Coming in November

Posted on July 29, 2011 by icelord75

As a pleasant little surprise for the day, Microsoft has announced and shown some pretty little images of two spiffy new devices. The first of them, unsurprisingly enough, a new wireless headset. However, this is certainly a more decent headset to get with the times, as it not only matches frequencies with the Xbox 360, but it also has Bluetooth in it for use on other devices. The design is nice and simple, small but not too tiny, and appears slightly sturdy. We’ll need our hands to be sure, but even if you DON’T own a 360, this still looks like a much better device than many others on the market, even if has a somewhat hefty $69.99 price tag.

The next of the devices is a new media remote. What I can say on this new device is that it seems to have a much sleeker and more colorful design than the original 360 Media Remote. Between Live TV and the console’s Netflix ability, a fancier remote is somewhat due. Although, it’s just a remote; it’s hard to do much special with it anyways. The biggest advances we’ve had are Bluetooth remotes and universal remotes. Unfortunately, neither of those aspects are a part of the new 360 remote. It’s just a fancy-looking collection of buttons for your 360. If you don’t have a remote for your 360 already and use the media aspects of it, then it’s worth getting. Otherwise it’s probably going to be more of a pass. Plus, it’s only $19.99, so you probably don’t have too much to lose if you feel like an upgrade.

Both devices will be available worldwide in November 2011.
