Metal Gear Solid 5 Screenshots Displayed at San Diego Comic Con *DEBUNKED*

*UPDATE*

Konami UK has proven the MGS 5 screenshots were a hoax. I’d feel duped, but I wanted so badly for it to be real that I let my optimism run away with me. Oh well, it was a pleasant couple of hours. I’ll leave the original article unaltered, because I find my blind optimism endearing, and I hope you all do as well.

The moment we were cast out of heaven, we became monsters.

That sounds like an innately Kojima quote, doesn’t it? Who else but the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series can plausibly write with that combination of grandiose imagery, gravitas, and just a pinch of insanity? Without even knowing the full context of that quoted sentence I already have chills running down my spine and confusion nesting deep into my brain, which means that a new Metal Gear Solid title must be on its way.

Announced (well, it has yet to be officially confirmed from Konami at this time, but barring a significant, face-egging hoax I feel comfortable in claiming the legitimacy of this statement) at the San Diego Comic Con, it looks like the mysterious game Hideo Kojima has been working on these past years, nicknamed Project OGRE, is none other than Metal Gear Solid 5.

Project OGRE (which up until now we’ve only really known that Kojima was heading the project, and that it was to use his new FOX engine) has been revealed in the released screenshots to stand for “Open Ground Reconnaissance Endeavours.” While little else has been openly discussed previously about the contents of Ogre, it looked from the few quotes given previously from Kojima to be something very different than what we’d previously expected from the famed designer.

With Kojima stating such cryptic tidbits as “[Project Ogre] is some game that has a very wide entrance,  a very open entrance…[and] rather than making very cinematic [I plan to] make something very free“, it sounded almost as if he were working on a game centred around an open-world concept. I’m not sure, but not a part of that sentence sounds like anything remotely Metal Gear Solid-esque to me.

While the idea would certainly be something completely out of left field, I for one would be incredibly excited at the idea of taking the universe of Solid Snake, cyborg ninjas, and rogue PMC’s into an open world arena. I just hope that doesn’t mean it’s an MMO. You don’t do well with MMO’s Japan, we talked about this.
